PURPOSE:

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Medical Library Association acts as a regional affiliate to provide services to its members in the District of Columbia and the states of Maryland, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, and West Virginia.

MISSION:

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the medical Library Association dedicates itself to excellence in health information services and to the advancement of the profession of medical librarianship.

GOAL 1:

MAC/MLA will foster the professional development and lifelong learning of its members.

Objectives:

  1. Provide affordable continuing education opportunities at the regional, state and local level.
  2. Encourage Academy membership for MAC members through a network of credentialing advisors.
  3. Promote and support the MLA mentoring program for new librarians by establishing a chapter network of willing mentors.
  4. Recruit approved MLA instructors from the MAC membership.
  5. Provide MAC members with the knowledge and skills needed by the health information professional as outlined in MLA's educational policy statement, "Platform for Change," through education and program offerings at the annual meeting.

GOAL 2:

MAC/MLA will promote cooperation and communication among its members.

Objectives:

  1. Provide opportunities for networking among members
  2. Provide programs and meeting times at the annual meeting for topics of special interest and relevance
  3. Continue to publish MAC MESSAGES bimonthly and the MAC Directory annually
  4. Promote and encourage access to Internet for members
  5. Continue to improve the MACPAC database so that members can share skill information
  6. Hold an annual meeting

GOAL 3:

MAC/MLA will serve as an advocate for its members and the profession.

Objectives:

  1. Strengthen the organizational diversity by recruiting members from minorities, paraprofessional staff, and other groups with low representation.
  2. Develop a plan to promote MAC to library schools in the region and recruit new qualified health sciences librarians.
  3. Develop orientation procedures for new members.
  4. Promote MAC committee opportunities, programs, and services.
  5. Publicize employment opportunities.
  6. Recognize the achievements of librarians who make significant contributions to MAC or the profession.
  7. Promote the expertise of health sciences librarians to administrators, to other disciplines, and to other professional organizations.
  8. Collaborate with other professional groups to share ideas and programs.
  9. Promote MLA membership to all MAC members.

GOAL 4:

MAC/MLA will provide leadership in addressing issues related to health information.

Objectives:

  1. Inform MAC members of legislative and regulatory issues and activities and their potential implications.
  2. Promote lobbying efforts by MAC members and coordinate these efforts with MLA and other professional groups.
  3. Promote research in health information sciences through the formation of a Research Committee.
  4. Develop educational programs to support research.
  5. Promote presentation and publication of research results of MAC members.

GOAL 5:

MAC/MLA will strengthen the organization to effectively fulfill its mission.

Objectives:

  1. Provide a continuous strategic planning process to monitor the mission, goals, objectives and activities of the chapter.
  2. Appoint a taskforce to review and revise the Financial Plan as needed to assure financial stability of the Chapter.
  3. Maintain and update Bylaws and Policies and Procedures to reflect the philosophy and operation of the Chapter.
  4. Maintain systematic records management and archives program
  5. Offer programs and services through the standing committee which are responsive to the needs of MAC members.
  6. Encourage and develop leadership abilities of MAC members through committee appointments and electrons.
  7. Represent MAC members interests and concerns to MLA and inform the Chapter of MLA activities and services.
