I received an A.S. in Computer Science from Rochester Business Institute, an A.S. from Daytona Beach Community College, a B.S. in Liberal Studies from the University of Central Florida, an M.P.A. from the University of Central Florida, and an M.L.S.I.S. from Florida State University and I am now sporadically taking classes in a program to earn a certificate in Geriatric Social Work. I have worked in libraries for 10 years. For four years I worked as a nonprofessional at the Florida Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, where, as a Clerk Supervisor II I supervised 32 state employees, inmates, and volunteers in pulling, mailing, and shelving tapes, records, Braille books and the equipment required to use them. From February 1996 through July of 2002 I worked at the William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library at East Carolina University where I first supervised the Audiovisual and Informatics Department and later became a Reference Librarian. Recently I have moved to ECUs main library (Joyner Library) and am the Liaison to the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice.

I am an active member of MLA and MAC have served on committees for both organizations. I have given speeches and presented poster sessions for MAC, MLA, and SC/MLA In 2001-2002 I served as a judge for the MLA Fellowship Committee. I am presently serving as the Chair of MACs Professional Development Committee after a year of being Vice-Chair, and in 2000 I served on the MAC convention Local Arrangements Committee.

On the personal side Patty (my wife) and I live with our two cats (Dusk & Dawn) in Greenville, NC, and enjoy reading (of course!), traveling, and working each year with the American Cancer Societys Relay for Life.

Information Services Librarian/Collection Manager Coordinator

I have worked at the Health Sciences Library, West Virginia University, as an Information Services Librarian for seven years and for the last 2 years as Information Services Librarian/Collection Management Coordinator. I graduated from Kent State University with an M.L.S. in 1986. Before coming to West Virginia I worked in public libraries in Ohio, Oklahoma, and Montana. In addition to Information Services and Collection Management duties, I supervise the librarys Serials unit.

Ive been a member of MLA since 1997 and am a member of the Nursing and Allied Health Resources section, for which I am the co-editor of the NAHRS newsletters Author, Author! column. I also served this year on the sections Nominating Committee. I am a member of the Collection Development and the Consumer and Patient Health Information sections of MLA. This year I was approved for membership in the MLA Consumer Health Continuing Education Credential Program at Level 1.

Ive been a member of MAC/MLA since 1995 and have served on the Honors and Awards Committee and the Professional Development Committee.

I was a member of the West Virginia Health Sciences Library Association from 1995-2001 and served as the groups President-Elect from 1998-1999 and as President from 1999-2000.


Karen Crowell

Health Informatics Fellow

I am currently doing a two-year NLM funded fellowship in Health Informatics at the University of North Carolina Health Sciences Library, with a focus on mobile technologies. Prior to the fellowship, I was employed for five years as an Information Services librarian at East Carolina University's Health Sciences Library. While at ECU, I was appointed to serve on the ECU Libraries Committee (1999-2000). I was also appointed to serve on the campus SACS committees responsible for drafting a document assessing the ECU libraries' compliance with accreditation criteria (2000). I served on the MAC Membership Committee (1998-2000) and the MAC Records Task Force (2000) and I wrote an article for MLA News summarizing our survey of MLA chapter archiving policies and procedures. Last year (2001-2002) I was chair of the MLA Continuing Education Grant Jury and the year before, I served as a member of the MLA Medical Informatics Grant Jury (2000-2001). I am currently a member of AHIP, AMIA, MLA, MAC, and ANCHASL.

Jane Borland

Librarian

Jane Borland, M.A., AHIP, is a candidate for MAC Treasurer. She is currently the librarian at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. She has been involved in local and regional activities since she moved to Virginia in 1997. She has served as a member of MACs membership committee and also as the committee chair. She has been chair of the Northern Virginia Health Sciences Librarians consortium. She is currently a member of the program committee for the 2002 MAC annual meeting.

In her spare time she and her husband spend time visiting historic and cultural sites in the area. She also enjoys reading and mall walking.

Julia Shaw-Kokot

Educational Services Coordinator

Julia Shaw-Kokot is Education Services Coordinator for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills Health Sciences Library (HSL). She has worked with HSL for the past eleven years. Prior to that she worked as the Area L AHEC Library Director in Rocky Mount, NC for five years. Julia has served MAC as Chair (1998), Treasurer (1988-1990), and Chair of the Professional Development Committee (1996). She has also served on numerous MAC committees and is currently on the MAC Annual Meeting Task Force charged to look at and make suggestions for future meetings. As an active member of MLA, she currently serves on the Awards Committee and has been Chair of the Rittenhouse Jury (1999-2000). Other MAC and MLA activities include developing and teaching CE courses and numerous poster sessions and presentations. Julia is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.

Jonathan has been a member of MAC since 1991. His past service to MAC includes being Chapter Chair, Newsletter Editor, and Chair of the Publications Committee. He is a current member of the Strategic Planning Task Force. As an active member of MLA, he currently serves on the MLA Publications Committee. Jonathan is a Distinguished Member in the Medical Library Associations Academy of Health Information Professionals.

Jill Mayer

AHEC Library and Information Services Network Assistant Director

Jill is an active member in both MLA and MAC. Her past service to MAC includes holding the offices of Treasurer, Chair-Elect/Chair, working on the Continuing Education, and Nominating Committees as well as two different Local Arrangements Committees for annual meetings. In 1992, Jill received the MAC Service Recognition Award. Jills past MLA work includes serving as Chair of the Bylaws Committee, serving on the Murray Gottlieb Jury, and participating in the MLA Oral History interviews. Jill has presented posters at a number of MLA annual meetings. Jill is also very active in the North Carolina AHEC Library & Information Services Network, having made numerous presentations at state and national AHEC meetings. Jill is a Distinguished Member in the Medical Library Associations Academy of Health Information Professionals.


Diane McKenzie

Collection Development Librarian

I have been a MAC member since 1987 when I first arrived in North Carolina. My real introduction to MAC was serving on the Program Committee with MJ Tooey. I have been a dedicated MAC person ever since and have served on several Program Committees. In addition, I have served on the Publications Committee and Nominating Committee, Chaired the Honors and Awards Committee, and Co-Chaired the MAC/MLA Task Force, in which capacity I wrote the MAC Centennial history. Last year I was appointed MAC Archivist. In 1998, I received the Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award.
