Chair-Elect

Mary Beth Schell

Statement of Interest:
This is an exciting time to be a librarian as evidenced by the October 2013 Special Issue of JMLA on New Roles for Health Sciences Librarians. The role of our professional organizations especially MAC in working to prepare and support librarians as we work to gain new skills or advocate for new roles is going to be critical. I was excited as chair of the MAC Professional Development committee in 2014 to increase our CE attendance by developing slightly new models of CE and if elected as MAC chair I would continue to support the Professional Development Committee in exploring models of CE that help prepare the profession for the future.  If elected, I would also work to support the work of the entire chapter in being a relevant partner to our members as they face the future at any stage of their career or skill set whether that be continuing ongoing traditional roles or navigating new frontiers.

Experience:
Mary Beth has been the director of the NC AHEC Digital Library for the past 15 years. She negotiates the purchase of electronic resources for a consortium of over 38 hospitals in North Carolinas as well as the AHEC Libraries. She manages and troubleshoots all access to electronic resources as well as evaluating resources for purchase. She is also actively involved in developing and maintaining an electronic resource portal that each member institution can use to access their resources and provide library services as well as organizing collections of resources on emerging topics. This unique position has given Mary Beth a good perspective on both the needs academic health sciences library and hospital libraries.

Prior to her work at the NC AHEC Digital Library Mary Beth was an NLM Associate Fellow. She spent a second year fellowship year at the UNC Chapel Hill Health Sciences library working on issues of library leadership and management as well as doing a research project on consolidating service points into a single service desk.

Mary Beth has been an active professional serving on a variety of MLA Committees including doing early work on the MLA Education Clearinghouse. Mary Beth is an active member of the Association of North Carolina Health and Sciences Librarians serving as communications chair, webmaster, and chair. Mary Beth has been active in both MAC and MLA as well as working on a variety of statewide AHEC committees.

Wanda Whitney

Statement of Interest:
Not long after I began my graduate program in library science, a mentor suggested that I join MAC as a way to develop professionally and network with a great group of folks. My MAC colleagues have shown me how important it is to be involved professionally at the local/regional level. And time and time again, MAC has proved itself to be vital to the growth and development of its members at all stages - from graduate school to retirement - by providing us with a variety of opportunities to learn from each other.

Many years later, I'm honored to be nominated for the Chair-Elect position and would love the opportunity to serve the needs of current MAC members and recruit new members no matter where they are in their career paths; and I'm particularly interested in further exploring the ways that MAC can support new and emerging roles, as well as developmental opportunities for health librarians and information professionals that provide increased visibility within their institutions.

Experience:
Wanda is a librarian at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD, where she provides reference and research support to both onsite and offsite clients. She also delivers presentations and training on library services for visiting librarians, students, internal staff, and other specialized audiences; and she provides support for the Spanish-language version of a popular consumer health Web site, as well as Web support for various internal and external library sites.

Active in various professional organizations as well, Wanda has served as a member of the MAC Communications, Professional Development, and Research and Assessment Committees. In 2011, she was a member of the MAC Annual Meeting Posters Committee and in 2014 co-chair of the Annual Meeting Invited Speakers Committee. Currently, she's serving as chair of the MAC Research and Assessment Committee. Other activities include serving on the executive board of the DC Area Health Sciences Library (DCAHSL) organization and the Professional Recruitment and Retention Committee of MLA.

Susan Arnold

Statement of Interest:
I am honored to run for MAC Nominee to the MLA Nominating Committee. The selection of future MLA leaders plays a key part in how our national organization serves and advances health sciences librarianship as a profession. Having been an active member of MAC since 2001, I believe I can represent MAC's goals and interests in this process.

Susan began working as a reference librarian in 2001 at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Library, and was appointed as its Director in 2004. Prior to becoming a librarian, she served as Dietetic Internship Director/Clinical Nutrition Manager at West Virginia University Hospitals for almost 14 years. She has served MAC in a number of ways, including as a member of the Honors & Awards Committee, as a reviewer of papers and posters, as a roundtable recorder, and as Secretary. Susan served as Co-Chair in charge of local arrangements for the 2008 Annual Meeting and as a member of the Exhibits Committee for the 2013 Annual Meeting.
