Chair-Elect

Roy Brown

Statement of Interest:

After moving to Virginia from Oklahoma 6 years ago to work at Virginia Commonwealth University, I looked to find a professional home similar to the one I had in SCC and joined MAC. From the time I joined I have felt welcomed and inspired by my colleagues in the region and have learned a great deal from them. It has also encouraged me to not only become active at the local/regional level but also nationally through MLA. MAC is an organization composed of members who are continually striving to improve and explore the ever-evolving field of librarianship. These efforts on behalf of members have led to collaborative opportunities and the ability to learn and benefit from one another's knowledge and experience.

I feel privileged to be nominated for the Chair-Elect position and would love the opportunity to serve the needs of current and future members of such a dynamic and innovative association. I'm particularly interested in exploring ways for MAC to become more inclusive by addressing diversity issues within the membership and encouraging MLA to prioritize diversity issues as well. MAC will benefit from being a more inclusive. In turn, by becoming more inclusive MAC may even see an increase in membership as more diverse issues are addressed.

Experience:

Roy is a Research and Education librarian at the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He serves as the liaison to the VCU School of Nursing as well as nurses at VCU Health. In this role, he provides reference and research services to students, staff, and faculty in the school and hospital. Through his work, Roy is deeply involved in the evidence-based and research endeavors of nurses. He is past chair of the VCU Libraries' Diversity Committee and a member of the VCU Inclusive Learning Council.

He is also active in both MLA and MAC. Roy has served as a member of the MAC Honors and Awards and Research and Assessment Committees. He has also served on the MAC Annual Meeting Program Committee when the annual meeting was held in Richmond, VA. Currently, he is the chair of the MAC Research and Assessment Committee and is a member of the MAC Contributed Papers Committee for this year's annual meeting. He is currently serving as chair of the MLA Rising Stars Committee and in the past has served on and been the chair of the EBSCO/MLA Annual Meeting Grant Jury.

Julie Silverman

Statement of Interest:
In my various positions over the years, I have always been heavily involved in local user groups. While I love the larger, national and international organizations, I feel the local groups are the best for discovering networking opportunities, providing day-to-day support of its members, and for building leadership skills in a supportive environment. If elected chair-elect, I would focus on encouraging all members to be more active in MAC – there is truly a role in MAC for everyone and I would like to bring some fresh faces to the various committees and leadership positions. As I believe in "stretch" goals, I would also like to start a discussion on how to refresh the MAC website and investigate how the chapter can actively use a variety of social media channels to engage the chapter members and to foster further collaboration and sharing of information.

Experience:
Julie Silverman is the Associate Director for Collections & Access Services at the George Washington University, Himmelfarb Health Science Library (DC). She manages the all aspects of technical services and access services for the library and is also a library tutor in the Clinical Skills and Reasoning program that is required for all first and second year medical students.

A member of MAC since 2013, Julie has been very active within the chapter. She is currently Registration Chair of the 2016 Tri-Chapter meeting. She also stepped in to assist with coordinating registration for the 2014 Annual Meeting, co-chaired the Membership and Recruitment Committee in 2015 (member 2014-2016), and served on the Nominating Committee (2014).

Previously, Julie was the Associate Director for Collection Management at the University of Colorado, Health Science Library (CO) and was active in both the Mid-Continental Medical Library Association and the Colorado Council of Medical Librarians.

Treasurer

Christine Andresen

Statement of Interest:
Having been a MAC member for several years, I am excited to have an opportunity to be a part of the MAC leadership team. My experience serving as the Treasurer at a state-level organization has prepared me to handle many of the challenges associated with serving as Treasurer for a regional organization, and the past five months in the Interim Treasurer role have made me confident that I will be effective in this position. I am honored to be considered as a candidate for MAC Treasurer and look forward to continuing to serve beyond my Interim role.

Experience:
Christine works as the Access Services and Instructional Design Librarian at Laupus Health Sciences Library. She has been active in MAC as a member and previously served on the Awards and Honors committee, before agreeing to serve as the Interim MAC Treasurer. Prior to this commitment, she served as the Association of North Carolina Health and Science Libraries (ANCHASL) Treasurer for two years.
