2025 MACMLA Awards

The MAC Honors and Awards Committee recognized the following award recipients at the 2025 annual business meeting. Please read the following excerpts from their colleagues’ nominations and join us in wishing them our warmest congratulations!

2025 MAC Award for Excellence by Health Sciences Library Staff

Katherine A. Carlson, Duke University Medical Center Library

According to the colleagues nominating her, Katherine exemplifies excellence as a health sciences library staff member:

Throughout the past three years, she has not only performed exceptionally well, but she also has made lasting impacts in all aspects of her responsibilities. Her accomplishments are extensive, ranging from providing outstanding customer service at the service desk to stepping in to lead innovative projects that enhance library services. She has earned numerous compliments from our patrons as well as the appreciation and trust from our library staff and leadership. We believe that Katherine is worthy of this award not only because of her numerous accomplishments, but also because of her impact on patrons and staff. She is a connector and collaborator – bringing together library departments to improve library services.

2025 MAC Award for Excellence by a New Health Sciences Librarian

Emily Joseph, Welch Medical Library, Johns Hopkins University

According to the colleagues nominating her:

Emily is a sought after and effective team player. Not only does she volunteer to either lead or participate, she is also effective in bringing others along and raising the external visibility of the library, either through her expertise in teaching roles or presenting at national and international conferences. One specific example of note: Locally, she is also active in MAC and stepped up this year to serve as co-chair for this conference. She has worked with local vendors to secure locations and other logistics, successfully recruited MAC members and local Baltimore health sciences librarians to participate in the conference hosting, and is overseeing the whole conference in collaboration with her co-chair.

2025 MAC Award for Excellence by a Health Sciences Librarian

David Nolfi, Gumberg Library, Duquesne University

According to his colleagues:

Mr. Nolfi’s accomplishments in librarianship, scholarship, and service are exemplary, and his work has been transformational, not just for Gumberg Library but also for Duquesne University, and for the careers of many librarians whom he has mentored. The list of his leadership contributions is impressive but does not give sufficient insight into David as a leader. True, he has the skills one might expect to succeed in these roles. He’s very well respected, an excellent communicator, extremely organized and efficient, and always willing to put in the time needed to get the work done well. But what sets him apart is his dedication to advancing the profession not only through his own efforts, but by finding opportunities for talented individuals and supporting their growth.
