Class Information: Improving the Health, Safety, and Well-being of LGBT Populations
- Abstract:
- LGBT individuals face many barriers in accessing healthcare, including discrimination, lack of access, misunderstanding, and fear. Consequently, many LGBT individuals do not regularly access appropriate and timely care. The more informed healthcare professionals are, LGBT patients and clients will become more comfortable in an environment that is often alienating, disrespectful, and traumatic. This class will discuss cultural competency, health information needs, and information resources for working with LGBT patrons.
- Objectives:
- Participants will develop a better understanding of the health information needs of the LGBT community
- Participants will examine the benefits of LGBT-focused cultural competency for the health care team
- Participants will be able to identify electronic, print, and other resources for building quality LGBT collections and reference materials
- Participants will gain ideas for outreach strategies to the LGBT community and identify inter-professional opportunities for librarians
Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive 2.0 hours of continuing education credit awarded by the Medical Library Association. Certificates will be available electronically following completion of the online survey supplied after the class. Please note that MLA CE contact hours will remain active for 6 months after the presentation
Aimee Gogan, MLIS, AHIP is the Health Professional and Evaluation Coordinator at the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) Southeastern Atlantic Region (SEA), located in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. At NNLM, Aimee is responsible for providing professional health information outreach and training to health professionals and those who work with them. She also conducts ongoing program assessment and evaluation to identify regional needs and opportunities for program development. Her areas of interest include health information literacy, critical librarianship, and medical humanities.
