The University of Vermont Libraries seeks an energetic and collaborative librarian as Director of Dana Medical Library to advance our vision. Serving students, faculty, and health professionals, Dana Medical Library is at the core of a dynamic academic health sciences environment that features innovative teaching and groundbreaking medical research. Dana Medical Library provides high quality medical and health sciences information and services that support the educational, research and patient care needs of the Larner College of Medicine, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the University of Vermont Medical Center. In fulfillment of the University’s land-grant mission, the Library also provides access to health information to the citizens of Vermont. Dana Medical Library is centrally located on the University of Vermont’s campus in beautiful Burlington. The director leads all aspects of Dana Medical Library operations, including vision setting, developing policies, coordinating and planning for services, in collaboration with a team of seven faculty librarians and 11 staff. The Director reports to the Dean of Libraries and works collaboratively with other units within the Libraries: Collection Management Services, Special Collections, Information & Instruction Services, and Access and Technology Services. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the overall administration of Dana Medical Library functions, including planning, staffing, budgeting, delivery, and evaluation of the full range of academic library collections and services to the Larner College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the University of Vermont Medical Center, and the citizenry of Vermont
- Cultivates relationships with the primary communities served, as well as the larger academic community, alumni, community members, business agencies, and other academic health science libraries to promote responsive services and create new initiatives in support of teaching, learning, research, and patient care
- Leads library faculty and staff in developing strategic initiatives and implementing collaborative policies and programs
- Supervises ten direct reports (seven faculty and three staff)
- Provides guidance and mentorship for library faculty in scholarship, professional development, and reappointment and promotion
- Promotes a positive work environment by practicing transparent management based on clear communication, openness to ideas, and creative and inclusive problem-solving
- Provides leadership in the University of Vermont Libraries’ planning and operations. Integrates the Dana Medical Library fully into the UVM Libraries’ common mission, budget, priorities, and organizational structure
- Promotes an inclusive environment
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent
- Minimum of six years professional library experience with progressive responsibilities
- Excellent facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Demonstrated success in leadership, management, supervision, and mentoring
- Demonstrated experience with planning and budgeting
- Familiarity with the theory and practice of teaching research skills to medical and health science students; knowledge of curriculum design and program assessment
- Broad understanding of health informatics
- Experience in a health-sciences setting
- Deep understanding of the crisis in academic publishing and scholarly communication, especially in medical and STEM publishing; familiarity with new models (especially open access models) and a commitment to efforts at reform
- Creative and scholarly work and service commitment commensurate with appointment to the level of Library Associate Professor or above
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Academic library experience
- Strong user-focused public services orientation
- Collections management experience
- AHIP certification or other demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development
- Experience integrating evidence-based medicine or evidence-based practice skills into curricula
- Grant-writing experience
