Description:
The Search Strategist partners with other members of the clinical project team to execute all functions needed to guide a client-initiated question into a well-synthesized deliverable, keeping in step with standard procedures, clinical relevance, and methodological practices.
The Search Strategist is primarily involved in the literature identification phase of a project. Specifically, the incumbent must actively collaborate with methodologists and client-facing personnel to consult on a literature search protocol that accurately reflects a client’s literature needs, and to construct complex literature search strategies, within multiple databases. Additionally, the Search Strategist provides administrative support to the Clinical Operations department by fulfilling full-text article retrieval requests, reference management modifications, and other related requests.
The Search Strategist also contributes to the ongoing instruction and development of team members literature search and screening understanding, by providing feedback, aiding in the assembly and dissemination of training materials, leading training workshops, and consulting on technological developments and process improvements.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Project Scoping and Protocol Development
- Collaborate scoping of new projects, refinement of review questions and PICO construction with clients and internal project teams
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop, fine tune, and finalize the literature search protocol based on the PICO methodology (Patients, Interventions, Comparators, Outcomes)
Literature Search and Screening
- Perform complex protocol-based literature searches in a variety of biomedical databases and non-traditional resources
- Import and export records from online resources and in house library management systems
- Provide quality control of literature searches results by performing quality control of team member literature searches and by auditing screening results
- Perform title/abstract on published clinical articles and determine their relevance against a project’s PICO protocol and end deliverable
- Review literature summary reports summarizing decisions for all study rejections
Training and Development
- Review search strategies of team member and provide feedback on improvements
- Create and maintain training materials on literature search and screening for team members
- Lead training workshops on literature search and screening processes
Full Text Article Acquisition and Tracking
- Track full text article purchases, upload documents to library records, and maintain article records in library management system per detailed protocols
- Report full text article purchases on a monthly basis
Miscellaneous
- Attend project specific and company meetings
- Attend performance improvement or additional training workshops, as needed
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues to continually improve the literature search and screening processes
- Provide insight on process and/or technology features that could enhance literature searching and screening or full text acquisition and processing
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Masters degree in Library Science or closely related field (ALA-accredited program preferred)
- Possess strong medical terminology knowledge and logical reasoning skills
- Ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work independently and ask and define important questions/issues
- Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment with quickly shifting priorities
- Ability to interface with internal project teams/leads and supervisor and respond to questions in timely and focused manner
- Possess excellent: attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and reading comprehension skills
- Ability to use a variety of information management applications/software such as RSS feed readers and Reference Managers such as Endnote
- Extensive experience searching biomedical databases such as Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library from multiple platforms (including but not limited to Pubmed and Ovid)
- Experience constructing search strategies for systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses
- Willingness to learn and search beyond traditional resources
- An in-depth awareness of current and emerging issues associated with evidence-based medicine, search obstacle, and the design of clinical studies
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint
