Description: As a community of healthcare information professionals, it is vital that we understand and are able to address the individual health needs of the dynamic communities around us in order to provide them with the resources they may need. In this webinar, participants will discuss demographic trends in the United States transgender community, learn to contrast sexual orientation and gender identity, and look into the biology of gender identity. Mental health, healthcare barriers, surgical treatment, and state policies as they pertain to this community will also be addressed.
Speaker Information:
- May Lau, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center and the medical director of the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) clinic at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. As one of the few board-certified adolescent medicine physicians in the Dallas area, Dr. Lau has been recognized as one of the top adolescent medicine specialists by D Magazine since 2011. She provides care for transgender youth in the AYA clinic and the Gender Education and Care Interdisciplinary Support (GENECIS) Program. She co-chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Texas Pediatric Society (TPS) Committee on Adolescent and Sports Medicine and is a Past President of the Texas Chapter of the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine.
Dr. Lau has been elected to the AAP Section on Adolescent Health Executive Committee. She is a fellow of the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine and a consultant to the Texas Medical Association Committee on Child and Adolescent Health. Her clinical interests are varied and include sexual and reproductive health in females and males, menstrual issues, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.
Dr. Lau has received funding from the AAP Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Program and TPS Foundation for her work on healthcare transition of transgender youth.
- Over the past 12 years, Patti Pagels, MPAS, PA-C has combined her passion for community medicine and undergraduate education in anthropology to teach students and residents how to evaluate and treat patients within a relevant community context. In her current role as Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, she is responsible for mentoring Family Medicine residents and scheduling them to partake in service learning experiences. To date, the residents benefit from over 30 community partners and preceptors.
In a second role as Medical Director for a homeless shelter, she supervises clinic care and teaches students and residents to practice care oriented towards health promotion and disease prevention.
On a volunteer basis, Patti provides direct patient care, clinical oversight and access to hormone therapy to transgender patients at a community partner, the Dallas Resource Center. Providing compassionate care to underserved, at risk communities has been a long time passion of mine from which this service naturally extends.
