Bio of Recent MAC Retiree: Hattie Vines
The Duke Medical Library bids farewell to longtime staff member Hattie Vines, who retired this summer after forty years of service. In addition to her role as Cataloging and Bibliographic Services Librarian, she served as a reference librarian, providing answers to questions and performing database searches
Hattie is the only remaining staff member who worked in the Library’s original location in the administrative building of the hospital. “I’ve witnessed many changes over the years,” she said. She recalled the advent of computers to the library
system, the days when doctors smoked in the Library reading room, and her original salary of $2.14 an hour.
Hattie says that some of her most noteworthy contributions to the Medical Center include the cataloging of many, many books; her work on the “Tea with Trailblazers” speaker series; and her way with people.
