Job Opportunity: Upstate Medical University – Scholarly Communications Librarian

The team at Upstate Health Sciences Library at Upstate Medical University is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable librarian to join our team. As the Upstate Scholarly Communications Librarian, you will play a key role in providing scholarly communication services and reference support to faculty, researchers, and graduate students. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in library information science or a related field, along with a passion for staying updated on emerging issues, trends, and technologies in the field.

In this job you will:

  • Lead Scholarly Communications Initiatives
    • Assist faculty and students in navigating the complex publishing environment, addressing topics such as predatory publishers, Open Access, APCs, Copyright and fair use, and Creative Commons Licensing.
    • Provide individual and group consultations to students, faculty, and staff on journal selection and evaluation, open access, author rights, and other publishing models.
    • Support researchers and liaison librarians on topics such as ORCID, fair use, publishing open educational resources, and journal and funder open access policies.
  • Serve as a Liaison and Collaborator to College of Graduate Studies, Research Administration, and the IMT Research Technology Core
    • Collaborate with research faculty and graduate students in publishing, using institutional and data repositories, and developing data management and sharing plans.
    • Assist with the management of the institutional repository, including compliance with publisher conditions, archiving the proper manuscript version, linking to supplemental materials and data in Figshare, and ensuring documents are compliant with accessibility standards.
    • Support compliance with the new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy.
  • Contribute to Reference Services
    • Participate in the rotating librarian on-call schedule, provide mediated searches, and offer database assistance.
    • Perform literature searches to support curricula, scholarship, and patient care and participate in orientations and tours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • ALA accredited Master’s degree in library information science or commensurate degree with relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of and interest in issues, trends, and technologies related to academic research, scholarly communication practices, and research data management.
  • Experience or interest in providing instruction, delivering presentations, and providing reference services.
  • Evidence of skills needed to foster new connections and build relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing instruction or training of others in the use of data curation tools and/or services (such as Figshare, ORCID, the DMPTool), and/or research profile systems.
  • Experience working in an academic or research library.
  • Experience searching biomedical literature, using databases such as PubMed/Scopus/Embase.
  • Education, training, or experience with data management workflows and research impact metrics.
  • AHIP certification.
