Responsibilities: The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) seeks a director who will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the William H. Welch Medical Library, serving Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins Health System.
The director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, operational management, and collaboration and outreach; directing the operations of the Welch Library and a staff of over 50 FTE; managing the financial planning process and a budget of ~$10 million; leading strategic planning and developing initiatives to advance library service to the academic health institutions; directing the work emanating from the 21st Century Welch Library Committee report; developing outreach, engagement, and communication strategies to ensure collaboration with the user community and transparency of governance; leading research and development efforts to support the improvement of information systems and services; establishing goals and measuring accomplishments against recognized standards; fostering cooperation and partnership to support teaching, patient care, and research; representing the library and medical institutions national and internationally; integrating knowledge resources with clinical activities and research initiatives; establishing coordinated policies and procedures for library operations; serving as a member of and supporting the Welch Medical Library Advisory Committee; coordinating with appropriate alumni and development offices to identify and raise funds to support library services and buildings; identifying and pursuing grant opportunities to support improvements in library services; serving on the University Libraries Council, comprising the directors of the 5 library systems at Johns Hopkins; coordinating library activities with Johns Hopkins information partners, including the Sheridan Libraries, Institute of the History of Medicine (IHOM) Library, Chesney Archives, Johns Hopkins Medicine Center for Information Services (JHMCIS), and IT@JH and Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center; and contributing to the profession of health sciences librarianship through engagement with appropriate organizations and societies.
Required: Master’s degree in library and information science, information science or informatics is required. Minimum 8 years’ experience in a research library or related environment, including administrative experience. Demonstrated leadership experience in program development and collaboration, effective library administration, and knowledge of library services and collection resources in service to academic health sciences programs. A record of professional contribution in national organizations. Accomplishment of successful grant application and management. A commitment to supporting a diverse environment.
Preferred: Additional advanced degree, medical library experience, a record of leadership in national organizations, and experience in development and fund raising.
Salary: The midpoint for this position is $189,844; actual starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. A faculty appointment may be available, commensurate with qualifications.
