MAC Retiree: Jill Mayer
Jill Byerly Mayer, Associate Director NC AHEC Information and Library Services Network, AHIP Distinguished Level, retired from the Health Sciences Library, UNC Chapel Hill in December 2011. She worked at the UNC HSL library for twenty years. Prior to moving the Chapel Hill, Jill was the AHEC Library Director for the Northwest AHEC Library at Boone, Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. She served as the hospital librarian and outreach librarian for a four county region in the mountains of North Carolina.
Jill served as President of MAC from 1990-1991. She has served on numerous MAC and MLA Committees. Jill has a strong interest in international librarianship. She was charter member of MLA’s Librarians Without Borders Task Force, and served as MLA’s representative to IFLA from 2005-2009, where she was a delegate to and later chaired the Science and Technology Division of IFLA. In addition, she served as a local mentor to a new foreign library science student every year through the university’s International Friendship Program.
Jill was the first NC coordinator of the Family Practice Inquiries Network (FPIN). She recruited and trained North Carolina librarians to work with clinicians co-authoring clinical inquiries that were published in The Journal of Family Practice. Together with colleague Connie Schardt at Duke University, she developed the Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice Tutorial that resides on the UNC HSL website and receives about 20,000 hits per month.
