Register for a Library Carpentry Workshop

Register now for a virtual Library Carpentry workshop hosted by MAC.

When: November 2 – 5th, 1:00 – 5:00 pm each day

Attendee Limit: 20

Cost: $25.00 for all four days

Library Carpentry introduces you to the fundamentals of computing and provides you with a platform for further self-directed learning.

Library Carpentry lessons were made by librarians, for librarians to help you:

  • automate repetitive, boring, error-prone tasks
  • create, maintain and analyze reusable data
  • clean up messy data
  • gain a grounding in the use of software in all fields of research
  • learn computational and data skills you can teach to others
  • work more effectively with IT and systems colleagues
  • develop the skills you need to drive your career forward in an increasingly digital age

This workshop will cover basics such as task automation and text counting and mining with the Unix shell, using GitHub, using OpenRefine for data cleanup, file structures, and the use of regular expressions for targeted searching. A jargon busting session at the beginning helps everyone start from the same baseline. Short tutorials alternate with hands-on practical exercises, and participants are encouraged both to help one another, and to try applying what they have learned to their own work-related and research problems during and between sessions.

Workshop schedule and more details about installing required open source tools and software coming soon.

See https://librarycarpentry.org/ for more information about the organization.

MLA CE credits will be available for this workshop.
