Information Literacy and Health Sciences Librarian

Responsible for carrying out the mission and programs of the Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary Library, especially in the areas of health science academic programs. Prepare and teach information literacy/research instruction classes. Provide research assistance to students, faculty and staff. Provide supervision of student staff during designated work hours.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities:

Serve as team lead in library information literacy sessions in the health sciences; responsible for keeping library colleagues abreast of new health sciences databases;

b. Develop, deliver, and assess instruction for students and faculty in the health sciences related to information literacy, health literacy, and evidence-based practice;

c. Establish collaborative relationships with faculty, staff and students in the health sciences;

d. Develop, evaluate, and maintain the Library’s collections (both print & electronic) in the health sciences using evidence-based collection strategies in collaboration with health sciences faculty;

e. Develop and maintain LibGuides and other online self-directed learning materials and/or tutorials for departments and programs in the health sciences;

f. Provide consultations for faculty, students, clinicians, and researchers in order to facilitate research and academic success; provide orientations for new students and faculty;

g. Be knowledgeable about emerging trends in pedagogical and assessment practices in the health sciences and incorporate them where appropriate into Reeves Library’s instruction program;

h. Participate in professional organizations and activities relevant to health sciences librarianship;

Information Literacy responsibilities Plan, develop and implement information literacy instruction across the curriculum;

Be knowledgeable about emerging trends in undergraduate and graduate pedagogical and assessment practices and incorporate them where appropriate into Reeves Library’s instruction program;

Work with faculty and other librarians to develop ways to access student learning;

May work with individual humanities and social science departments to integrate information literacy in their course offerings.

Research assistance responsibilities: Provide one-on-one research assistance to students, faculty and staff.

Other duties: Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Library Director or mandated by the service requirements of the library or health sciences accrediting bodies.

Be familiar with library emergency procedures and implement them as necessary.

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree required. Library instruction experience is required, with a minimum of two years in the health sciences. Must have demonstrated knowledge of evidence based medicine and health sciences best practices. Must have demonstrated experience in collaborative planning and problem solving abilities. Ability to work in a team approach to the provision of research and instruction services is essential. Ability to work in a flexible, collegial setting in which interpersonal skills, a strong desire to serve students and faculty, and clarity in written and oral communication are required.

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with the academic health sciences environment; AHIP certification; collection development in the health sciences; degree in a health sciences or related field. Previous experience with the Medical Library Association, chapter affiliation or publication in a peer-reviewed health sciences journal is preferred.
