Position available: Associate Director for Content and Discovery
Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives is seeking applications for an innovative, collaborative, and knowledgeable librarian with a broad vision of collections and their role in scholarly communication in the health sciences. This leadership position will oversee the collections, advance research data management as a collections service, and share expertise in scholarly communication. The Associate Director for Content and Discovery is responsible for selecting, de-selecting, purchasing, licensing, and ensuring intuitive access to the Library’s electronic and print monograph and journal collections, databases, and other electronic resources. The Associate Director collaborates with staff in the Library, Archives, and across Duke University to develop relevant research data management services focusing on data description and discovery. The Associate Director also consults with researchers on scholarly communication issues, including the NIH Public Access Policy, data sharing, and other initiatives. As head of the resource management team, the Associate Director also supervises the Electronic Resources and Acquisitions Manager, Access Services Manager, and Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Manager. This leadership position is a key member of the Library’s planning and management groups
Collections and Resource Management
- Facilitates short and long range planning for the library’s collections based on the priorities of Duke Health and trends in scholarly communication.
- Coordinates and manages the evaluation and selection of monographs, serials, databases, and other resources, both electronic and print, for acquisition or cancellation.
- Allocates collections budgets for print and electronic books, databases, and electronic knowledge resources; and monitors expenditures on an ongoing basis in order to effectively provide the resources needed in support of Duke Health.
- Analyzes and shares usage data to inform collection development, budgetary return on investment, and resource promotion.
- Maintains business relationships with — and gauges the performance of – publishers, monograph and journal vendors, agents, and dealers.
- Negotiates and reviews licenses for all electronic resources. Works with the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), other campus libraries, and other consortia on the analysis and negotiation of shared vendor contracts.
- Identifies ways to streamline review, selection, ordering and processing procedures.
- Oversees the maintenance of multiple knowledge bases to ensure accurate holdings and to facilitate a simple user experience for patrons.
Data Services and Scholarly Communication
- Partners with staff in Library, Archives, and others across the institution to develop appropriate research data management services with a focus on data description and discovery.
- Provides expertise and consultation to faculty, staff, and students on issues in scholarly communication, including open access publishing, copyright, and open science initiatives.
- Works with other library staff to facilitate institutional compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.
- Monitors trends and develops expertise in publishing and pricing models, and developments in scholarly communication.
Administrative and General Operations:
- Supervises Electronic Resources and Acquisitions Manager, Access Services Manager, and Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Manager.
- Promotes opportunities for training and continuing education for department staff to enhance their expertise in relevant areas.
- Ensures that accurate and current departmental policies and procedures are maintained and followed.
- Ensures collection and reporting of departmental statistics.
Answers queries from patrons and staff regarding the Library’s serials collections, and access issues for electronic resources.
- Coordinates the MCL&A disaster recovery plan with Library Administration and regional planning groups.
- Assists with reference and other services as needed for the daily operations of the library.
- Actively participates in the Library’s committees, task forces and special initiatives.
- Represents the Medical Center Library externally on committees and task forces.
- Serves as library’s representative on Duke and TRLN committees related to serials and collection development.
- Masters in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of other education and experience.
- A minimum of 5 years of library experience with increasing project management and/or supervisory responsibilities.
- ALA accredited degree.
- Management training.
- Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
- Experience in collection management and negotiating licenses.
- Ability to provide leadership in a team-oriented organization.
- Excellent supervisory and/or project management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment.
- Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively in a complex, fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in adapting to change.
- Knowledge and interest in expanding and changing library environments and technologies.
- Knowledge of health sciences journals, databases, and monographs.
- Knowledge of trends in open science, data sharing, and data management.
- Strong computer skills and understanding of IT applications in health science libraries.
- Ability to interpret copyright law in relation to provision of library services.
