DUTIES:
This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Louisville, KY. The Librarian is responsible for supervising both existing library programs and the day-to-day operations, and within existing budgetary and organization policy constraints, planning and implementing new programs.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Recommends, implements, and reviews all library policies and procedures related to public and technical services;
- Provides reference (i.e., information) services to library clientele;
- Develops, within budgetary constraints, comprehensive, quality library collections (i.e., monographs, serials, audiovisuals, and electronic resources);
- Coordinates all selection and acquisition activities to reduce needless purchases and duplication;
- Selects, administers, and organizes the monograph, audiovisual, serials collections of the medical library;
- Monitors library control point activity;
- Monitors the library Intranet page;
- Maintains currency in the library field through professional reading and personal and/or email contact with fellow librarians on the local, state, regional and national levels;
- Supervises the interlibrary loan services;
- Reviews printed catalog cards and modifies them to ensure quick and efficient access to the medical library monograph collection;
- Writes reports, establishes polices, and develops proposals relative to library operations with the final approval of the Associate Chief of Staff for Education;
- Oversees the library technicians, temporary employees, student help, and volunteers in the performance of their daily library tasks;
- Serves as backup on the various library systems in the absence of the library personnel with primary responsibility;
- Provides courteous service to the administrative/management staff, clinical personnel, students, employees, patients, patients’ families, visitors, and any other non-VA individuals;
- Maintains a safe working environment and reports any unsafe condition to the Associate Chief of Staff for Education;
- Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive information from unauthorized release, loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion;

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
