POSITION: Nursing Liaison Librarian

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Health Sciences Library (HSL) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual to join the User Services Department team as the subject specialist for nursing. The individual in this position is charged with participating in fulfilling the Library’s mission to connect people everywhere with knowledge to help them teach and learn effectively, assure quality health care, conduct vital research, and make informed decisions. Reporting to the User Services Assistant Department Head, the Nursing Liaison Librarian will identify information needs and maintain outreach services to faculty, students, researchers and staff from the School of Nursing and UNC Hospitals (a Magnet Program), as well as help the department team to meet the health information needs of the citizens of North Carolina. Expected services include: expert mediated searching to provide synthesized answers in response to advanced requests for nursing and patient care related information; proactive dissemination of selected nursing information to targeted audiences to help researchers and clinicians stay current; creation and maintenance of online nursing user guides focused on the needs of specific user populations including the general public; effective and innovative client-centered education services using a variety of methods and technologies in client settings, the library and online; and individual and group consultations on nursing information discovery, retrieval and management.
Librarians at HSL are expected to participate in professional and scholarly organizations and activities, pursue personal professional development, and maintain awareness of the evolving trends in library and information services. The individual in this position is expected to maintain current knowledge of nursing information resources and content; the issues related to health professional education across disciplines and levels; the tools used to manage retrieved information (e.g. RefWorks, EndNote); the tools used to create online user guides (e.g. Drupal, LibGuides); the changing trends in scholarly communications including open access and NIH public access; resources for finding grant funding; and the evolving requirements related to the management of research data.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. At least two years of experience in an academic health sciences library, nursing school library, hospital library, or other academic library supporting nursing education. Demonstrated understanding of nursing research and education processes. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated commitment to continued professional development. Experience providing nursing information to diverse client groups and using technology to deliver information services at the point of need, particularly in a healthcare setting.
Preferred: A nursing degree. Experience teaching adults using emerging technologies and instructional methods. Demonstrated experience working on systematic reviews and other comprehensive searches. Understanding of the clinical translational research process. Experience using one or more bibliographic formatting programs, e.g. RefWorks, EndNote, Mendelay, Zotero, or Papers. Knowledge of scholarly communication and open access initiatives such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy and compliance. Knowledge of finding tool(s) for grants or foundation funding, e.g., COS Pivot, Foundation Directory online.

This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
