MAC Retiree: Julia Shaw-Kokot
Julia Shaw-Kokot, RN, MSLS, AHIP, is “graduating” into retirement on June 30th, after working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Health Sciences Library for almost 23 years. During that time she served as the School of Nursing Liaison with an adjunct position in the school and as a member of the UNC Health Care’s Nursing Research Council, co-ordinated education services, and been one of two Assistant Department Heads for User Services.
Julia has contributed to the health sciences profession by mentoring and supervising School of Information and Library Science students and new librarians, serving on and chairing the Medical Library Association Chapter Council, and representing Chapter Council on the MLA Board of Directors. She has been an active MAC member since presenting a poster at the first annual meeting she attended, and has served as MAC Chair and Chapter Council Representative. Julia is also a peer reviewer for Medical References Services Quarterly.
Julia’s library career began at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia in Thompkins-McCaw Library. From there, she moved to Area L AHEC and worked with the hospital libraries in the region. Prior to her library career, Julia was a bedside nurse for fifteen years in several North Carolina hospitals.
