Report from the Chair: 2009 TriChapter Meeting Report
From Diana McDuffee:
We had a very successful meeting in Atlantic City Oct.5-8 with beautiful weather and a lovely beach. There were over 200 daily attendees from all three chapters and our new Pittsburgh chapter members. About 85 MAC members attended. The program content was excellent. Thank you to Steven Douglas, Dale Prince and your counterparts in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia who really put together an excellent conference. Thank you to all the MAC members who were on the planning committees.
The Annual Business meeting went by so quickly that I want to recap some of what happened and hand out congratulations to our winners and honorees.
At our Business meeting we had plenty of members to make a quorum and we had a tie breaking vote for the election of our new chair-elect. Karen Knight (University of Virginia) was elected chair. I want to congratulate both Karen and Amy Blevins who was the other candidate. The choice between two such well qualified candidates was difficult as evidenced by the need to break a tie. The Board looks forward to working with both of you.
The new officers are:
Chair-Elect: Karen Knight
Chapter Council Representative: Jonathan Lord
Chapter Council Representative Alternate: Melissa Ratajeski
MAC Nominee to the MLA Nominating Committee: Pat Thibodeau
MAC Honors went to:
MAC Librarian of the Year is Lois Culler, Director of the Health Sciences Library at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia. Lois is the chair of both the hospital and health system patient education councils and is a leader in a county health literacy initiative. She’s currently leading the effort to provide patient education on demand through the hospital closed-circuit television system. She serves on a hospital patient-centered care committee. Her nominator said, “Even when she has been interrupted a hundred times in a day, she takes time to answer questions, brainstorm solutions and offer advice. She is forward-thinking, well respected, and encouraging of her colleagues. She is constantly looking for ways to increase the visibility of the library. When many libraries are focused on self-preservation, the Inova Fairfax Hospital Health Sciences Library has continued to expand its services and reach
The Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award for service to MAC went to Elaine Sullo, George Washington University Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, Washington,DC
MLA MAC Chapter Council Reports
Julia Shaw-Kokot reported that Paula Raimondo, MLA Chapter Council Chair, brought the recommendation of the Pittsburgh Chapter merger with the MAC Chapter to the MLA meeting in Hawaii and the merger was approved. The Chapter Council action followed the vote of the membership of the two chapters to merge and made the merger official.
I want to extend our congratulations to Julia Shaw-Kokot, Health Sciences Library, UNC Chapel Hill who was elected Chair of Chapter Council for MLA succeeding Paula Raimondo who is also from the MAC Chapter.
I want to personally thank Paula for all of her council and support to the MAC chapter and for shepherding our merger proposal through the steps to achieve a smooth merger of the two chapters. In the coming year MAC will be well represented at MLA Chapter Council with Julia as chair, Jonathan Lord as MAC Chapter Council Representative, and Melissa Raatajeski, University of Pittsburgh as the Chapter Council Representative Alternate.
