Serials and Systems Librarian position at GWU

The George Washington University Medical Center’s Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library seeks a librarian with demonstrated skills in innovation, collaboration and the technical background to manage the library’s serials collection of over 2400 journals titles and to maximize the systems associated with their use within the library community of the Medical Center. The collection is largely electronic in format but also contains some remaining print titles. The Serials & Systems Librarian will be pivotal in the success of the planning, management, utilization and education about the use of the collection. The Serials & Systems Librarian reports to the Associate Director, Collection and Access Services, and is a member of the Collection and Access Services management team.
Duties and responsibilities include the following:
· Responsible for management of daily operations in the Serials Department and overall successful availability of all journals in both print and electronic formats
· Manages the Electronic Resources Management System (ERMS) and other systems necessary to optimize the management and availability of electronic and print journals
· Manages journal linking process in collaboration with the Serials Manager and the Electronic Resources/Instructional Librarian
· Responsible for education of users regarding successful utilization of electronic serials and outreach efforts to faculty members to ensure the integrity and maintenance of a high-quality journal collection.
· Participates in the Library’s instructional program as an Informatics Tutor.
· Creates analyses of serials collection, budget and others as needed
· Oversees communication between the department and vendors, integrators, etc. and serves as final contact to resolve problems when necessary
· Collaborates with, trains and supervises the Serials Manager and collaborates with the Print Resources Specialist for all matters related to print serials
· Collaborates with the Head of Cataloging and Reserves to ensure accurate reflection of serial title changes and serial format changes in the online catalog.
· Collaborates with the Electronic Resources/Instructional Librarian in negotiation for and licensing of electronic serials as needed.
· Participates in the Library’s liaison program, working with one or more departments within the guidelines and expectations of the program.
· Participates in Collection Development committee as representative for serial resources and interdisciplinary library teams as requested.
· Maintains current knowledge of trends in librarianship, especially electronic resources, their impact and management issues. Provides leadership within the library on serials resources of both formats and their management.
· Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic:
· Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program or equivalent relevant Master’s degree.
· 1-3 years experience working in a library setting.
· Experience working with both print and electronic serials, and providing access to electronic serials through database and web-page maintenance (OpenURL linking, PubMed LinkOut and Links@Ovid).
· Experience analyzing collection, budgets, workflows and issues related to the optimal operations of the department.
· Experience with trends in libraries, especially the digital environment and effects of digitization within technical services and the library as a whole.
· Excellent oral (presentations, training workshops) and written (training materials, requested analyses, documentation) communication skills.
· Working experience of all applicable software/systems and ability to use Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheets for analysis.
Preferred:
· Experience with serials in both a print and electronic environment.
· 2-3 years experience in a health sciences setting in an academic library.
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
· Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with all library staff.
· Strong data analysis skills
· Knowledge of Sirsi or other integrated library system, and experience/knowledge of library systems for access and/or management of electronic journals
· Knowledge or experience with OpenURL linking, PubMed LinkOut and Links@Ovid linking
· Experience with serials workflow from identification of items to patron access for both print and electronic journals/serials.
The minimum salary is from $48,000, based on experience and qualifications, plus excellent academic benefits.
