As we transition from one season to another, I am energized and excited about my transition, and I want you to be a part of it. Whether you are a seasoned MLA committee member or you have never been on an MLA committee, now is the time to volunteer. The application period will begin on November 1, 2017, and close on December 15, 2017.
By participating on a committee, you can learn more about MLA and how it operates, work with colleagues on projects of interest, and build your professional credentials and expertise, all while earning points toward membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).
More than 589 volunteers serve on committees, task forces, and juries or as representatives to allied organizations. Committee appointments are generally for 3 years, while juries are for 1 year, and task force appointments are for varied lengths of time. Since these are time-limited appointments, each year, MLA needs members to fill open spots. We especially encourage newer members to apply, and we look forward to their involvement and the perspectives that they bring. We also realize that many of you may be unable to attend the MLA annual meetings, and though it is preferred, it is not required for most committees.
Volunteering is easy! The online application form is integrated into MLANET at http://www.mlanet.org/p/su/rd/survey=aec07fd6-a9e0-11e7-98c1-bc764e105b8b, so there is no need to re-enter information that is already in your member profile. You will not be asked to select specific committees, so it is extremely important that you list your areas of interest, competencies, and experience; preferred time commitment for committee work; and previous MLA volunteer experiences. Please remember that you must be a member of MLA when you apply in 2017 and remain a member for the duration of your appointment.
The application form will be available on MLANET, from November 1, 2017, to December 15, 2017. After the application period, current chairs and chair-designates, working with their MLA staff liaisons, will review applications and recommend committee assignments based on applicants’ interests, competencies, and experience. As president-elect, I will review the recommendations and determine final appointments in coordination with the specific needs of each entity. We expect notifications of new appointments to go out no later than March 1, 2018. As a volunteer, you are choosing to give your time, effort, and talent to further MLA’s mission and with an attitude of professional responsibility that goes beyond your basic obligations. I appreciate that commitment and look forward to working with you.
MLA cannot survive without your involvement, so please consider applying today!
